Fifth Grade Curriculum

HOW DO WE KNOW? THEME STUDY
During this time students develop their information processing, communication, creative, and critical thinking skills. First, students will find and evaluate resources as they investigate a topic having to do with the brain. Next, students will use all of the multi-media skills they learned in the past to share their research through a brain museum.

PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
The teacher will lead discussions and activities to help students function in groups, effectively interact with others, and strengthen their personal problem solving skills.

ENRICHMENT CENTERS:

TOPIC STUDY
Topic study time gives each child a chance to explore subjects of interest. Students choose from a wide variety of subjects in the arts, history, sciences, and literature. After reading about the topic, the student uses the information to complete activities at the different levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy.

MATH
First semester, students learn basic algebra concepts through Hands-On Equations. Second semester, the students apply their problem solving skills through a series of problems called, fittingly enough, Problemoids. The fifth grade book presents extended problems, many of which take several weeks to solve. Options are available for students who need more support or challenge.

SCIENCE
The students use technical reading and the scientific method as they work with solar power and scientific instruments to design their own experiments. They will then learn to determine specific criteria and apply rigorous testing procedures as they conduct product testing.
